What Mr Modi’s BJP is seeking is to turn Nehruvian India on its head, starting with the very institution named after him. It is all for the cause of changing the mindset of India moulded by the Congress-led freedom struggle and more than six decades of almost uninterrupted Congress rule.Stage two of the drama was performed at the postponed hearing, with the same lawyers arriving, this time with the national flag held aloft on long bamboo poles while some of them beat up Mr Kumar even as he was presented before the judge.

The beef controversy was pressed into service on other occasions, the common refrain being that beef-eaters should go to Pakistan, metaphorically aligning them with the other.True, Opposition members in Parliament voiced their dissent but the deed was done. Can the BJP and its mentor carry out such a revolution in a democratic setting  First, the BJP and the RSS are not too priggish about what they believe to be the shibboleths of democracy.25 crore for the event. Television cameras were on the spot and some of the shots shown on TV screens were apparently doctored. The panorama of events we have been witnessing in recent weeks and months falls in place under a masterplan, exceptional in the annals of world democratic politics..The marriage of dhoti with computers is certainly innovative. Nationalism equates with Hindutva whose essential characteristics are: India is a Hindu nation, despite its diversity and the different faiths people profess; the cow is sacred; secularism must be shunned; sadhus and godmen must be revered; the highest forms of knowledge must be found in the history of ancient India. The fly in the ointment is the political consequence of this experiment: A new mood of unrest and defiance in several Indian universities; protests by the minorities, particularly Muslims; the treatment given to the Hyderabad University on the suicide of a dalit student losing the BJP many precious dalit votes. While President Pranab Mukherjee gave the event a miss, Mr Modi blessed it by his presence and an eloquent tribute. And the head of the Art of Living Foundation, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, planned his extravaganza on the Yamuna riverbed, much to the initial fury of the National Green Tribunal, which subsequently caved in, limiting itself to imposing a fine of Rs 5 crore, which was further diluted by enforcing a five per cent down payment and a four-week window for paying the rest. For them, the JNUSU president had already become an anti-national icon. It is a telling comment on this “modernisation” phase that the BJP’s mentor, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is has decided to change its trademark, baggy khaki shorts that go ill with corpulent middle-aged men, for brown trousers.

The future is up for grabs. The short message sought to be conveyed is that in Hindu India, Muslims and other minorities live on sufferance. Second, it is an overarching campaign to hidden frame supported glass curtain wall Manufacturers be carried out in stages. Kanhaiya Kumar, president of the JNU students’ union, arrested on sedition charges, was to be produced in the Patiala House court complex. Events are still murky, including alleged anti-India slogans raised by students.Meanwhile, the patronage being given to godmen and sadhus has been breathtaking. And the CNN-IBN TV channel revealed that the Union government had sanctioned Rs 2. The Prime Minister had demonstrated his brilliant use of technology in winning the last general election that brought him to power.Having wrapped themselves up in the national flag and promoting the BJP’s definition of nationalism, the saffronisation of India is being harnessed to modern technology.

In the new scheme of things, there is a special pedestal for gurus, with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar having been accorded the second-highest national honour in the honours list.A major building block was to select Jawaharlal University (JNU) to hone in on the February 9 gathering on campus in the cause of the hanged Afzal Guru.Hence we have a new approved script. And pro-BJP lawyers — or men in black jackets — were there to beat up JNU students and members of the media who had gathered. As programmed, the sequel to the event was more important than the campus gathering. While the rural folk will be fed on a diet of sarkari godmen and saints, the urban up and coming population will be bombarded with admonishments on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites on the virtues of the new idea of India — the BJP, the RSS and the tricolour flying high over a new version of India. BJP supporters spread the word that beef was being served in the canteen of the Aligarh Muslim University, which was in the process of being denied its minority institution status. When Hindutva and the veneration of cows and godmen become the new norm, people will come to accept the extravagance of BJP’s beliefs. The same skills are being employed in the cause of making his rule semi-permanent.

But the BJP is after bigger game: changing the public discourse and building up brick by brick a new idea of India which can only flourish under a BJP dispensation.Modern methods of propaganda will then be put to full use.To prop up the new idea of India, another theatre of war was opened, that of the sanctity of the cow.We have it on the authority of Amit Shah, the Bharatiya Janata Party president, that the ruling party’s aim is to stay in power at the Centre for the next 25 years. It is, of course, par for the course that BJP leaders, in the recent instance in Agra, including a minister of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, should stir the communal pot, with elections in Uttar Pradesh looming on the horizon. There is the yoga guru Baba Ramdev, with his flourishing commercial empire, feted by officialdom. What was being served, it was made clear, was buffalo meat. Even the Army was dragooned into service for building pontoon bridges.

From India, 500 names have turned up in the Panama Papers, the records accessed by the Munich newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung which collaborated with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and 100 media organisations internationally, including in this country. Some 11 million leaked documents of Mossack Fonseca, the Panama law firm which typically acts as agents for tax evaders and money launderers from around the world to set up offshore companies, are truly the WikiLeaks of the world of shady finance. They are clear and unambiguous about the names of the rich and famous China pvc bi-folding door manufacturers from various walks of life — high politics, high business, exalted levels of government, and the world of sports and art — from around the world. To unravel the truth in the Panama Papers case will also take years, possibly a generation. These are not entities that have, let’s say, simply defaulted on governmental arrears.. The sums involved will run into lakhs of crore rupees. Finance minister Arun Jaitley has threatened to take firm action against those who did not avail themselves of the compliance window offered by the government and pressed on with their financial “adventurism”.If the government is serious about tackling black money, it can hold out the threat of pre-emptive attachment of high-value assets of alleged wrong-doers which could be kept in an escrow-type account supervised by the judiciary until suspicions have lifted.

But evidently no one has got to the bottom of that story.Evidently, law-abiding individuals and businesses will have no need to look for ways to conceal their income and tax liability, park such funds in tax havens, and frequently organise the return of such money — the process is known as “round-tripping” — to India after being laundered clean. In 2011, the Manmohan Singh government moved against those whose names had been revealed in the case of HSBC accounts in Switzerland.Seeking to engage in damage control after the publication of the Panama Papers, the government announced the creation of a multi-agency expert group to get on to the offshore funds trail. Some of these include individuals whose proximity to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party is the envy of many a buccaneer.

However well-intended, this is unlikely to convince a sceptical public grown inured to the crooked ways of the well-heeled, many of whom are lionised by the government. These are the crème de la crème of many countries who have calculatedly dodged taxes — typically on money made in irregular ways — and have attached such funds in devious, layered ways intended to conceal ownership, to companies of doubtful provenance, or have established such companies. The Supreme Court could play a role of some importance in instructing the government to be serious.

“It gives you a great sense of perspective,” she remarked. The proceeds will go to World Vision, a global NGO working with poor children and for which Samantha is brand ambassador.”

She doesn’t watch her diet — running an ultra marathon is a test of how you can survive on pretty much nothing, apart from the few packs of instant noodles that you manage to cram into your backpack. “I was out of my comfort zone, yes, but it was my relaxation and freedom from the rest of the chaos, all of which we have constructed!” Remarkably, she isn’t a sporty person at all. The hottest and the coldest deserts took place after a gap of only four weeks, because the window for racing through Antarctica is so small. Two years ago, Samantha set off on a 32-day run across South Africa, all of it cross-country, to spread awareness on the fact that 80 per cent of the women there don’t have access to traditional feminine hygiene products. It was more than that, of course. “I did the driest desert — Atacama; the windiest, which is in China; the hottest — the Sahara; and the coldest — Antarctica,” she said. Diminutive but full of fire, 31-year-old Samantha (she could pass for 20), who was in Bengaluru China Aluminum Sliding Window for the Australia India Youth Dialogue 2016, has taken on the most extreme territories in the world, running in some cases for worthy causes and in others simply for the challenge. It was a five-day, non-stop race in Leh-Ladakh that made Samantha resolve to return to India. “People would look at me and go ‘awww the tampon girl’!” she said. “Doing the desert marathons was a big challenge in terms of funding and making sure I didn’t miss my law exams in the process,” Samantha recalled. I ran through the Sahara desert carrying 20 per cent of my body weight on my back! It boils down to the smallest details — I cut off the handle off my toothbrush and carry only the bristles because that saves me a good 10 grams. We had 24 hours of incredibly hot weather and the next moment, we were bang in the middle of a blizzard. “I went through altitude training, because the race peaked at 6,000 metres. “In Rajasthan, for instance, there are communities which send off daughters to the sex trade. “I realised that my diet during an ultra marathon is what most people in the world eat everyday. I took two six minute breaks over the course of five days. Ultra-marathoners carry their sustenance in their backpacks, including food, sleeping gear and anything else they might need.

I’ve learned one thing, though — it’s not all black and white.”. Samantha trained as a lawyer in Melbourne and in her last year of college set off to Chile, where she did her first ultra-marathon.” In August 2016, she will embark on a 4,000 km run across the breadth of India, to further education amongst women and also to explore the biggest barriers along this path. If they don’t, the girls are married very young. I had hypothermia and we weren’t stopping to sleep, either.” Still, Samantha refers to her ultra-marathoning as “relaxation”. She is the youngest person and the first woman to have done all four desert ultra-marathons within the course of a year. The lack of access to these products meant girls would have to stay  home for four or five days each month, resulting in a very high dropout rate. “That was one race where I thought I pushed my body too far,” she said. “As you can see, I’m not the tallest person in the world, I’m under five feet,” she laughs. “When you’re on an ultra marathon, you pack everything you need. “You can’t simulate the weather conditions either, the closest I have come is hot yoga, where we do the poses in a room where the ambient temperature is 38°C,” she explained. What began as a physical challenge became her vehicle for social change. It’s a rigorous life, to be sure. The petite woman who introduces herself as Samantha Gash is a far cry from what one would expect when one is waiting to see an avid ultra-marathoner. We consume a lot more than we need and this is my way of breaking it down and living as simply as I can. Everything counts.

“It’s all about how strong your mind is and how you keep yourself calm as you run through the Sahara desert at 50°C. It’s easy to say child marriage is awful, but if flesh trade is the alternative, which would you choose ” She will run 800 km across Rajasthan, upto Delhi and end just south of Shillong, going through desert, urban, jungle and mountain terrain.
